The interest aroused by Leibowitz’s music has reached its peak. Finally, his debut album “Souls Meet” will be available in music stores. Through his music, one gets a glimpse of the story of the artist’s life, and that of his wife. Asaf Leibowitz
(42) was born in Haifa to a family of secular former kibbutzniks. From an early age he played guitar and keyboard, was influenced by musicians such as the Beetles and Eric Clapton, and played in local youth bands, as part of his completely non-religious upbringing. After completing his army service, he studied music at “Rimon” where he worked with musicians such as Aviv Gefen who wrote a song for the album with him.
At the age of 26 he became a baal teshuva, and has dedicated himself in the past few years to learning torah, gaining semicha and working as a sofer stam. In addition, he teaches at a girls’ seminary and gives regular shiurim to a wide audience. “I believe that in our time”, says Asaf “a time when there is an unbelievable spiritual awakening, people are searching for meaning in all sorts of directions. If we can only learn how to find wisdom in genuine Jewish sources
that everyone can relate to, and to give them over in the right words with the right energy, then we can make meaningful progress, both as individuals and as a whole…”. This, his first album, “Souls Meet” is composed of a blend of musical styles and different hashkafas. From the music of his childhood to all that he has gathered along the way (“From Bob Dylan to Rebbe Nachman…”. Leibowitz’s spiritual growth is a recurring motif in his songs; his lyrics express the pain, crisis, uncertainty and hope in the quest to connect to the deepest most spiritual part of us.
All the music on the disc was composed by Asaf, the lyrics are the joint creation of Asaf and his wife Pazit. Dudi Tamir is responsible for the outstanding production. “Souls Meet” is being distributed by Greentech – the leading Jewish music company in Israel. Production is underway for a round of appearances to launch the new album.
The album promises an unusual musical experience, heightened by genuine reflection and free of preconceived notions in the pulsing texts. Enjoy!
