When I was around 18 years old myself, the first singing voice which actually excited me for its color and unique Jewish character was the voice of a then young man by the name of Bency Schachter. I heard him on the first album put out by the Neginah Orchestra which featured a beautiful song named חזק ימלא משאלותינו. This album also introduced the Musical Arrangements of another budding talent who would go on to change the Jewish world with regard to its music, Yisroel Lamm.
Experiencing the combination of the rich singing voice of Bency, the fresh and exciting arrangements of Yisroel Lamm and the exploding energies of the young Neginah Orchestra swept me away into what would become my life’s journey in Jewish Music. Bency and his singing, Yisroel and his arrangements and the newly formed Neginah Orchestra made up entirely of young talented Jewish musicians expressing themselves with a style and vigor never heard before, is where it all began.
So when the opportunity came up that I was able to write a composition for Bency Schachter (now a Zaidy) to sing as a duet together with one of his Ainiklach, Mendy Leshkowitz who was becoming a Bar Mitzva, I was inspired to write this and produce הנרות הללו תשע”ז for them. For me it was closing a circle.
Haneiros Halolu is arranged by the young Mendy Hershkowitz, a huge talent who will definitely influence Jewish Music going forward in his own right.
A Lechtigen Chanuka!
