ABOUT SMF: The New York Sephardic Music Festival seeks to increase interest and awareness of Sephardic Jewish culture, with a focus on the unique Sephardic musical tradition. The Festival highlights the diversity that exists within Sephardic music by showcasing contemporary Sephardic musical talent, as well as through panel-discussions with ethnomusicologists and performers that aim to historicize the Sephardic heritage. Our goal is to give both the Sephardic community, as well as the broader Jewish community of New York, the opportunity to learn the diversity and beauty of the rich Sephardic musical culture. Since 2005 the SMF has brought tens of performers to thousands of people, providing a much needed arena for the Sephardic heritage to be exposed.

ABOUT SHEMSPEED: Shemspeed is a promotional force and resource for Jewish music , highlights artists around the globe, while exposing new unaffiliated audiences to the diversity that exists within the culture and its music. Shemspeeds’s website (shemspeed.com), is an expansive resource for music fans which hosts its own TV and radio station, free mp3s from hundreds of artists, a regularly updated international events calendar and an online store that sells everything from digital downloads to stylish t-shirts. Shemspeed’s daily blog (shemspeed.com/daily) has also become a reputable source of trends and information in the growing Jewish culture scene.

ABOUT THE FOUNDER: Erez Safar, a.k.a. Diwon, (formerly dj handler) is the founder and director of Shemspeed (the largest, most diverse Jewish music website), Modular Mood Records (an independent record label), and the Sephardic Music Festival. Erez’s musical persona, Diwon, defies stereotypes: As a multicultural maestro, he produces a mix of Yemenite and Sephardic music blended with electro hip hop beats. Diwon is influenced heavily by his family that migrated from Yemen to Ethiopia and finally settled in Israel. Diwon’s many accolades include London Radio’s 104.4 FM which called him “one of New York’s hottest Jewish musicians;” URB MAGAZINE listed him amongst their NEXT 1000; The Village Voice stated that his work “as producer and DJ is among the most adventurous and banging on the new Jewish music scene;” The Jerusalem Post dubbed him, “Jewish music’s multimedia mogul;” Forward listed him as one of the Top 50 “most influential Jews of 2007;” The Jewish Week gave him a spot in their “36 Influential under 36″ list; and Heeb listed him in their “Heeb Hundred.” Erez resides and maintains his many companies in the stereophonic heart of Brooklyn.
